Fellow Products is the brand behind many great products for home coffee brewing including the Stagg Pour-over system, Stagg stove-top kettle, the recently released Stagg EKG variable-temp kettle and upcoming EKG+ app-integrated kettle, as well as the Duo coffee steeper, and Prismo for Aeropress. Truthfully, over the past five years since they began, they have released a number of fantastic products, both for coffee and tea, with the aim of helping you make coffee at home better.
Less than two months ago they opened a brick and mortar store on Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission District that is not just their HQ, but also a sleek retail store that displays all of their products and provides an interactive experience to guests when they visit.
A few weeks ago at the beginning of January, I had the opportunity to visit Fellow and meet with the company's founder, Jake Miller, as well as Brand Manager, Hanna McPhee. During this visit, they gave me a rather in-depth tour and description of what you can expect when you visit their space both now and in the future.
From the sidewalk outside, Fellow's "man-wearing-bow-tie" logo grabs your attention immediately. As you get closer to the store, you notice what could be compared to an Apple store of brewing devices.
Once inside, the front half of the store is all retail space with many products on display, including a few custom Stagg Kettles. You can walk around, look at, as well as handle these products on display and of course, ask any questions you may have of their team there regarding their products.
Beyond the front retail space is where the real fun begins for those coffee enthusiasts and professionals alike that want to get hands-on time with Fellow's line of products.
On the right side of the store, Fellow hosts a "brew wall" that features coffees from five different roasters which they will rotate each month. Visitors can pick up a bag of coffee to take with them or they can buy a test tube that contains one brew worth of a coffee and then proceed to the brew bar where one of Fellow's brew guides will assist you in brewing up your coffee using the Stagg Pour-Over System and EKG Kettle. This is the area where their already "insta-famous" coffee flavor wall also resides.
With an Acaia Orion, Mahlkonig EK43, they will dose and grind your coffee, as well as heat your water for you using the Stagg EKG while discussing ideal brewing parameters for your specific coffee on the Stagg Pour-Over system.
Once they set you up, you can then brew up your coffee using their equipment with the guide there to talk you through every step, should you need more in-depth guidance.
I had the pleasure of brewing up some coffee with Jake and Hanna during my time there. I will tell you as a coffee enthusiast who has brewed on the Stagg pour-over system before and many other brewing devices; it really is an enjoyable experience to be able to play with their equipment and brew up some tasty coffee right there in house.
This brewing space is also an area that Fellow intends to use for hosting various educational events and collaborations with roasters. In fact, just recently, they teamed up with Onyx Coffee Lab to hold a Brew Master Class led by 2017 U.S. Brewer's Cup Champion, Dylan Siemens.
In the future, there is a room behind the brew area, where I sat down with Jake and Hannah to talk about a number of things, that will become an interactive fabrication lab where Fellow will be actively designing prototypes of products. Visitors can watch the work happen through the glass windows and may even have the opportunity to provide feedback in the design process.
If you have the opportunity to visit Fellow, I recommend you do so and soak in the whole experience. I want to extend a special thank you to Jake and Hanna for the hospitality and for taking time out of their day to give me such an in-depth tour.
